Tawanda Maswanhise: Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for January issues title race warning and discusses Motherwell future

Tawanda Maswanhise has warned Hearts, Celtic and Rangers that Motherwell are still in the title race.

The 23-year-old, who has been named William Hill Premiership Player of the Month for January, believes the Fir Park club can still challenge for top spot - despite being 13-points adrift of the leaders.

Maswanhise scored five goals in four league games last month to help the club finish the month unbeaten, with Motherwell currently fourth in the table - just five points off their points tally for last season with 13 matches to go.

, despite playing the last 12 minutes with 10-men at Fir Park on Wednesday.

He told Your Site News: "You've seen it yesterday with one man down, every man on that pitch for Motherwell, including myself, we fought really hard to get the point that we deserved.

"We've been doing the same style of play the whole season [and] you're starting to see more results now. You're starting to see more success, we're getting our plaudits. It has been good.

"A lot of people, a lot of players want to say it's a three-horse race right now, but we're still behind it.

"I genuinely think we can nick a few points and be in and around it. So, just watch out for us and we should crack on."

Maswanhise is the third Motherwell player in a row to claim the player of the month prize, after winning it in November, while team-mate Elliot Watt won it in December.

He has scored 13 league goals this season, making him the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership.

It has been a dream campaign so far, with Maswanhise also scoring for Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations in December.

That form resulted in the likes of Rangers, Celtic and Anderlecht linked with a January move for the player - but Motherwell insisted he was not for sale.

He told Your Site News: "Honestly, I knew there was going to be speculation from clubs in and around the country - but I had my head down.

"You've just got to play football. Let the football do the talking, everyone's heard that saying. I've done that really well in January, and I've just got to carry on."

When asked if he will hold talks over his future with boss Jens Berthel Askou and the club, he added: "Obviously, I always like to say I want to go to the next step. I want to play European football. This club is on the way to completing that. Hopefully, we do get European football next season.

"Like I always said, at the start the season, I want to get my head down week by week. I don't like to think too far ahead in the season because, I get affected by my performances.

"It wasn't difficult [dealing with speculation in January], but there was a lot of noise here and there. I did manage to keep my head focused game by game."
