Scottish Cup round-up: James Tavernier hits hat-trick as Rangers thrash Queen's Park

Rangers will host Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals after a merciless 8-0 demolition of Queen's Park, who knocked them out of the competition at this stage last year.

Glasgow's big two will now play each other on consecutive weekends after their Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox on March 1 - live on Your Site.

There was to be no repeat of history against The Spiders as captain James Tavernier netted a first-half hat-trick and new signings Ryan Naderi and Tochi Chukwuani struck their first goals in Rangers colours.

Danny Röhl's side are now unbeaten in 10 domestic matches ahead of an important week of league action, which includes a trip to Motherwell on Wednesday before the visit of leaders Hearts on Sunday - both live on Your Site.

A lot can change in a year and that was reflected by almost every facet of the game.

Line-ups, managers, atmosphere, but most obviously, confidence levels.

One year ago, Philippe Clement's Rangers were in crisis. Three managers, 18 signings, and one takeover later, they could end the season with a league and cup double.

It wasn't long before they were ahead as January arrival Naderi headed in his first goal for the club after eight minutes from Tavernier's corner.

The captain then got his first of the afternoon 10 minutes later before quickly adding a second when Queen's Park goalkeeper Ferrie, who famously denied him from 12 yards last year, punched a corner-kick delivery into his own goal.

Tavernier completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot before half-time, bringing his season's tally to 13 goals.

The club's top scorer played his part in the fifth too as his corner found the head of Tochi Chukwuani, whose effort was deflected in off ex-Gers youngster Matthew Shiels.

And the goals didn't stop there.

Naderi headed in his second just five minutes after the interval, and Bojan Miovski scored his 10th of the campaign from a well-worked short corner routine 10 minutes from time.

January signing Chukwuani then secured his first Rangers goal to complete the scoring with the final kick of the game.

Tavernier was undoubtedly the player of the match, but a special mention must once again go to set-piece coach Scott Fry. Five of the eight goals scored came from set-plays, making that 21 in total for the season.

Elsewhere, Falkirk required extra-time to beat local rivals Stenhousemuir 2-0 and secure their spot in the last eight. They will host the winners of the rearranged tie between fellow Premiership outfit Dundee United and fourth-tier leaders Spartans.

Meanwhile, League Cup winners St Mirren welcome Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle to Paisley, and cup holders Aberdeen face a visit to Dunfermline Athletic should they better Motherwell in their rescheduled last-16 fixture.

Full quarter-final draw

St Mirren vs Partick Thistle

Falkirk vs Dundee United or The Spartans

Rangers vs Celtic

Dunfermline Athletic vs Aberdeen or Motherwell

Ties to be played on the weekend on March 7/8.
