Van Dijk says Salah is still so important for Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has stressed the continued importance Mohamed Salah has as the club look to make a success of their season.

The Egypt international had one of his best games of a so-far underwhelming campaign with a penalty and an assist in the 3-0 win over Brighton in which Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai scored as Liverpool cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Salah has started every match since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations. Prior to his departure he was benched for four and omitted completely for one.

That was after going public with his frustrations and suggesting his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had broken down, casting doubts over his immediate future.

The situation appears to have eased during his absence on international duty and he now appears to be more in tune with what Slot requires from him.

He may have scored only two club goals since November 1 but Van Dijk insisted Salah had other qualities which were not so visible.

I think Mo is still so important for us. He is still a leader and important for me personally, as a captain, to have around and to have him on the pitch as his presence benefits the team, he said.

He always gives the team more than goals. Theres obviously a lot of focus on his goals at the moment and thats also part of his life because he sets the standards so extremely high that when he doesnt score as much he gets criticised.

For us nothing has changed, we all want him to score and we all want us to do well as a team but its not been an easy season and the only thing we and he can do is keep going and try to be important.

There is a lot more than just to be out there trying to score goals, there are so many things people dont see that are important to try to become a successful team.

Despite the apparent truce off the field doubts remain over whether Salah will see out the final year of his contract, especially if his numbers do not improve.

But Van Dijk wants him to at least see out his current deal, adding: The full focus is on trying to make this season a success first and then you never know what happens.

I always want Mo to stay because Im a good friend and weve been through the highs and not-so-highs together for so many years.

Trafford unsure over his Man City future due to Donnarumma

James Trafford admits he was taken aback when Manchester City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Trafford was handed the City number one jersey when he rejected Newcastle to return to his boyhood club in a 27m move from Burnley last summer.

With the long-serving Ederson heading for the exit, it appeared Pep Guardiola had earmarked the 23-year-old for the goalkeeping role long-term.

But after starting the first three Premier League games of the season, the situation changed when City opportunistically brought in Champions League winner Donnarumma from Paris St Germain on deadline day.

The Italian has been preferred since, with Trafford largely having to settle for domestic cup appearances.

Trafford said: I didnt expect the situation to happen but it happened. I just get on with it. It is what it is, its football. Youve got to keep grafting every day and when the games come, play as hard as you can.

England U21 international Trafford, who came through the City youth ranks before joining Burnley in 2023, is less than 12 months into a five-year contract.

Yet given the current circumstances, he is unsure what the future holds.

Lets take it a day at a time and try and work as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens, said Trafford, who featured in Saturdays FA Cup fourth-round win over Salford.

Ive obviously got a contract (but) I dont know what happens next season. I just know that Ill just take it a day at a time and try and improve.

Tudor named Spurs head coach for rest of season

Tottenham rejected Bergvall approaches from PL rivals

Tottenham Hotspur rejected enquiries from Chelsea and Aston Villa about midfielder Lucas Bergvall in January, according to The Athletic.

Bergvall has been unable to hold down a regular role in Tottenham's starting line-up this season and two Premier League rivals made contact to check his 'situation.'

But Spurs were not willing to let the Sweden international leave the club.

Slot: Konate is vital, we want him to stay

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has revealed his desire to keep Ibrahima Konate at the club - calling the defender "vital" to his plans.

The French defender's contract is up at the end of the season but no agreement has been reached yet over an extension - despite Slot confirming that talks are underway.

Its just as good from him as from Virgil [van Dijk], said Slot of Konate's form.

Ibou has had a very good spell recently. He had a lot of good games earlier in the season but then he was also part of the reason why we conceded a goal.

His general performances were good but then a small mistake he made immediately led to a goal and so he was judged differently. But he is having a very good partnership with Virgil since Ive been here and, just like Virgil, he has always been fit. Touch wood. These two are vital for us, not only because of the quality they have but because of the lack of options we have behind.

We are in talks with him so that tells you what we want.

Its clear we would like him to stay but negotiations are ongoing so lets see where that ends. We wouldnt be in negotiations if we didnt want him to stay.

Horncastle explains Tudor appointment

Italian football expert James Horncastle explains why Igor Tudor could be the perfect short-term appointment for Tottenham Hotspur.

Ronaldo set to end Saudi strike

Latest from Your Site News' Kaveh Solhekol:

Cristiano Ronaldo will end his strike on Saturday and is set to play for Al Nassr against Al Fateh.

Ronaldo has missed his side's last two Saudi Pro League games plus their Asian Champions League Two match against Arkadag because he has been unhappy with the way Al Nassr were being run.

Ronaldo hinted at his return when he posted a number of training pictures earlier today with the caption "locked in."

Al Nassr can move back up to second in the Saudi Pro League tomorrow and one point behind leaders Al Hilal if they win at Al Fateh.

Al Hilal went three points clear of Al Ahli today after a 2-0 win over Al Ettifaq.

Euro football expert reacts to Tudor news

European football expert Andy Brassell gives the lowdown on Igor Tudor's background, as the former Juventus and Marseille coach takes charge of Spurs on an interim basis till the end of the season.

Can Tudor keep Spurs in the Premier League?

The Athletic's Serie A writer James Horncastle on Igor Tudor:

Playing a back three will depend on whether he has the centre-backs to do that. The injuries make that a problem at Spurs. He does favour playing the Antonio Conte and Gian Piero Gasperini way 3-4-2-1. But he has shown himself to be adaptable in needs-must situation. And this is one of them.

What you will see in Igor Tudor in his press conferences, hes quite an affable character. When he was a defender, he was rough and ready, elbows out, he wasnt afraid to be a badass. But in press conferences hes very personable, friendly but in the dressing room and on the sidelines, he is someone who expects disciple. That tough guy does come out.

Theres certainly a belief that Tottenham need leadership not just from players such as Conor Gallagher or when they tried to sign Andy Robertson but also from a coach. He believes he has got what it takes to be that leader.

He will know the smell in the dressing room of what a relegation fight looks like. When he was at Udinese, he didnt have the players Spurs have in the dressing room. He will look at it and be relatively confident of delivering the minimum objective of staying in the league.

There will be players in that dressing room who have worked in Serie A and know how coaches expect players to work in that league. That will help him start life at Tottenham. My only fear is the fixtures they have got. Its a tough start.
